The Army Forward Observers course qualifies Royal Australian Artillery members on the ability to direct indirect fires, such as Artillery and Mortars, in support of friendly manoeuvre elements. Forward Observers work in independent close knit small teams and are taught how to patrol into positions which allow observation of the threat so that they can employ a range of offensive systems to support the manoeuvre plan. This is the first course in a two course series, where Forward observers are trained in the basics prior to expanding their knowledge into the full suite of Joint Effects including Close Air Support, Rotary Wing Support and Naval Gun Fire.
