Deadly typhoon strikes central Philippines; at least 90 dead

태풍 갈매기 강타한 필리핀서 사망자 최소 90명 Over in the Philippines. A deadly typhoon has struck, killing 90 and leaving many others missing. Our Park Kun-woo has the latest. Destructive winds and devastating flooding caused by Tuesday's Typhoon Kalmaegi also known locally as "Tino" have swept across the central Philippines, killing at least 90 people according to AFP on Wednesday. Many reportedly drowned, while others were even killed by falling trees and landslides. Most of the reported deaths were from Cebu island that's still recovering from a deadly earthquake that occurred at the end of September. Among the victims were six military crew members whose air force helicopter crashed on Mindanao island on its way for a humanitarian operation to regions battered by the typhoon. Their bodies has been discovered and a related investigation is underway. Around 26 people are still missing and hundreds of thousands have been evacuated from their homes. But even those who survived are left with harrowing memories. "We were really anxious because the longer the rains continued, the higher the floodwaters rose. It even reached half of our second floor." "Everything on our ground floor was destroyed. Our TV, our kitchen, our sliding door, our air conditioner, our windows, everything was destroyed." Though the typhoon has weakened since making landfall, winds are still reportedly blowing at over 80 miles per hour. While the Philippines experiences an average of 20 storms and typhoons every year, the national government has distributed aid, including food. Kalmaegi is forecast to make landfall on Thursday night in central Vietnam, an area already hit hard by severe rain and flooding.
