Woman sitting under flyover STORYLINE: Areas and homes in India's Greater Noida, outside New Delhi, remained waterlogged on Thursday due to the swelling of the Hindon river. The swollen river submerged agricultural land and village homes. Nagma Rani, a resident of Greater Noida, lost most of the items in her shop to the floodwater. "It was very difficult. Since yesterday, we have had some relief (from floods). All the goods in our shop have gone bad," Rani said. India’s weather agency on Thursday issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Telangana, parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, and parts of North India. Monsoon rains across the country have already brought about 2% more rainfall this year than normal, the weather agency said. Record monsoon rains killed more than 100 people in northern India over the last three weeks, officials have said, as the downpours caused roads to cave in and homes to collapse. Around 1,600 hectares of land was submerged in the floodplains in Noida and Greater Noida, Press Trust of India reported on Wednesday. India regularly experiences severe floods during the monsoon season, which runs between June and September and brings most of South Asia’s annual rainfall. The rains are crucial for rain-fed crops planted during the season but often cause extensive damage. Scientists say monsoons are becoming more erratic because of climate change, leading to frequent landslides and flash floods in India’s Himalayan north.
