More than 300 cars parked in a private company yard were submerged due to the rise in the water level of the Hindon River in Greater Noida area, about 50 km from New Delhi. The swollen river has also submerged agricultural land and village homes in the area. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for New Delhi for Thursday while Raigad and Ratnagiri districts in Western India have been put on red alert with forecast of extremely heavy rainfall. India regularly witnesses severe floods during the monsoon season, which runs between June and September and brings most of South Asia’s annual rainfall. The rains are crucial for rainfed crops planted during the season but often cause extensive damage. For Shyam Vir Shaak, a farmer in Greater Noida, he said all of his crop has been lost. He added: "We couldn’t even take away our valuables from the homes because all of a sudden the flow of the river became too much for us to handle." Usually, a dead river full of untreated sewage, the Hindon river has now swollen up resulting in extensive flooding of nearby villages and agricultural land in Greater Noida, near New Delhi.
