Fifteen protesters were arrested, police said. Three thousand officers - triple the ordinary number - were deployed around east Jerusalem to keep order during weekly Friday prayers and access to the hilltop shrine was restricted to women and Muslim men over the age of 50 with Israeli ID cards. Friday prayers at the site, attended by thousands of Muslims every week, have often been a flashpoint for clashes in the past, and last week, fierce clashes erupted in the wake of Israeli construction work. Some of those who were refused entry to the Islamic compound, prayed outside the Old City with Israeli Muslim leader Raed Salah. This Friday's prayers appeared to end in relative quiet, and only minor clashes erupted in Jerusalem. In the West Bank, however, at the Qalandiya checkpoint near Ramallah, dozens of Palestinians threw stones at Israeli security forces who in return threw stun grenades and tear gas. No casualties were reported. There has been sporadic unrest in Jerusalem since early February, when Israel began work on a new walkway up to the Old City compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. Muslims have claimed that the work will harm the site's mosques, a charge Israel denies. He is expected to resume his post in the new government.
