Welcome to Day 1 of my journey through Arbaeen, the world's largest annual peaceful gathering and pilgrimage. Every year, more than 20 million pilgrims walk nearly 50 miles (80 km) from Najaf to Karbala, Iraq, honoring Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred at the Battle of Karbala over 1,400 years ago. In this first day of the journey, I experience the incredible hospitality of the Iraqi people through the famous Mawkibs—volunteer rest stations offering free food, drinks, massages, medical care, and places to rest for millions of pilgrims. Along the way, I meet travelers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Palestine, and Iraq, each sharing why Arbaeen is deeply meaningful to them. This documentary also explores conversations about faith, sacrifice, justice, unity, and the personal stories of pilgrims whose lives have been shaped by the legacy of Imam Hussain.
