NJ Spotlight News: January 4, 2021

Monday marks 10 months to the day since New Jersey reported its first confirmed positive case of COVID-19. During that time, 494,317 infections have been reported. Officials announced an additional 2,292 new positive cases and 38 additional deaths on Monday. Total confirmed and probable deaths in New Jersey is 19,244. The deadly spread of the disease at state-run veterans homes is prompting the Attorney General’s Office to intervene. According to reports from NorthJersey.com, the office is assembling a grand jury for the investigation of possible criminal charges into how the outbreak was handled. For the first time since the pandemic began, the Murphy administration is reporting results from the rapid tests known as antigen testing. It reveals an additional 50,838 positive cases across the state, but those numbers aren't included in the total count because the efficacy of the tests are much lower than PCR results. The patchwork counting has made it difficult to understand the true scope of the virus.
