Wide pan of scene, AUDIO: Gunfire STORYLINE Clashes erupted in the Palestinian village of Nilin on Tuesday between Israeli soldiers and protesters who were demonstrating against the Israeli built West Bank barrier. The protesters, from Israel, the Palestinian territories and other countries, scuffled with Israeli soldiers who responded by firing tear gas. No injuries were reported on either side. Several demonstrators were detained. Israel started building the West Bank barrier in 2002, initially portraying it as a strictly temporary defence against Palestinian suicide bombers and other attackers who have killed hundreds of Israelis in recent years. However, the barrier's meandering route and massive cost suggest it could be used as the basis for a future border. Israeli and Palestinian critics say the route often has little to do with security and is instead meant to grab more land for expanding settlements.
