This new rule will be effective in all railway zones across the country, including the East Zone of Goa. Travel on waitlisted tickets will be completely banned from January 1, 2026 According to the new rules, passengers holding waitlisted (WL) tickets will no longer be allowed to board sleeper (SL) and all AC coaches (1A, 2A, 3A). If all seats in a reserved coach on a train are full, then: No new waiting-list tickets will be issued. Nor will existing WL ticket holders be able to board that coach. If a ticket remains in the waiting list even after the chart is prepared, it will be considered invalid. Why did the Railways implement this rule? According to railway officials, this decision was taken in view of several serious problems. Crowding and overbooking problems Reserved coaches were becoming overcrowded due to wait-listed passengers boarding them, causing significant inconvenience to passengers with confirmed tickets. Safety reasons Overcrowding in coaches posed a significant risk of disputes, falls, and emergencies. The new rule will help train ticket takeover control and help platform staff.
