Laity Sunday - Faith of our Fathers : The Methodist Macedonian Call | Faith Methodist Church

We learned from today’s scripture (Acts 16:9-10) how God called Paul (through vision ) to preach the Good News in Macedonia (Northen Greece). The same story was also experienced by James Thoburn and William Oldham in 1885 where they sailed from Calcutta (India) to Singapore (Malaya) and started the 1st Methodist service (together with Charles Philips). 3 𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚: 📍 THE CALL OF THE FAITHFUL Even though they did not understand at all yet they chose to obey. (Phil 3: 13-14) 📍 THE CALL OF THE SPIRIT God gave Charles Philips a vision to come to the dock, to wait and welcome James & the parties. God provided! From the funding, the man for the mission (James and William), the accomodation (Charles) and especially the place to hold the service (at the town hall). Indeed, God organized everything. 📍 THE CALL OF THE CHURCH On Sunday, 8 Feb 1885 (evening time), the 1st Methodist service was held. In front of 150 people of mixed races, James Thoburn preached from Zechariah 4:6 - ”not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit’ saith the Lord”. James (and the team) knew that it wasn’t a coincidence that God called them to Singapore. They also knew it was time to plant a church in Singapore. It doesn’t matter where our roots/ancestors are from. We are here today at Faith Methodist Church to worship God and serve one another like what the Ephesians 2:20 said ’built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone’ Let us be the forefathers to the next generation.
