Situation at Paengmok Harbor

Situation at Paengmok Harbor

As you heard,... search and rescue divers will try to break into the vessel to retrieve the bodies they spotted earlier this morning. It's a race against time for the rescuers... with bad weather in the forecast for later this afternoon. Arirang's Yoo Li-an joins us live from Peng Mok harbor... nearby the site of the ferry capsize. Li-an, what's new with search and rescue operations? Hi Connyoung. I'm here at Peng Mok harbor which is roughly 10 kilometers from the site of the accident. The coast guard is looking into sending about 8 to 10 divers at once for a total of 40 times today,.. into the accident site. But the rescue team has temporarily halted the operation for now due to the strong currents, but will start again 5 p.m. local time when the tides will be at their calmest. The divers will be trying to retrieve three bodies that were spotted earlier this morning in the vessel. They tried earlier, but were unable to break through the windows. The rescue team is also planning on installing what's called a jack-up barge, which is a small platform that can be used as a base for divers. The coast guard here is also expected to cast a wire net in the vicinity of the site, to ensure that no bodies drift away in the strong currents. How is the weather looking down there right now? And I also hear there has been an oil spill has hindered rescue efforts. Connyong, the wind is picking up right now and I'm seeing a bit more fog. Unfortunately, the weather is expected to get even worse into the afternoon. There will be rain sometime in the afternoon, along with strong winds of 12 kilometers per hour and tides will be high as up to 2 meters. But it's not just weather that will be hindering the rescue operation-- there has been an oil spill from the Sewol-ho ferry. There is an oil band of about 1 kilometer in diameter around the site of the accident now. The coast guard now has to work on both containing the oil spill while continuing the search and rescue operation. Connyoung. Thanks for the report... that was our Yoo Li-an reporting from Peng Mok Harbor... the focal point of the search and rescue operations.
