Fishermen in S. Korea hold sea protest against Japan's radioactive water discharge

The contaminated water could reach Jeju Island in less than seven months. More than a million people in South Korea's fishing industry are holding protests against Tokyo's decison. Choi Won-jong went to hear directly from them. Fishing boats with signs and banners fill Dadaepo port in Busan. Nearly one hundred fishermen headed to the port on Friday morning... to show their anger at Japan's recent decision to dump Fukushima waste water into the ocean. "The Japanese government say that the water they are releasing won't cause any scientific problems, but not only the Korean people but also the Japanese people fear the release of the radioactive water and are demanding the withdrawal of the decision." To make their voices heard effectively... the protesters chant slogans. "Rescind your decision to release contaminated nuclear plant waste water immediately " And the rally moved onto the water, the boats sailed around the harbor, chanting and honking their horns. "And, dozens of fishing boats are here on the water right now... with one message... that this ocean is all they have." These fishermen in Busan are not the only group of protestors who came out today. At the same time... over a million people working in the fishing industry nationwide were out protesting from Incheon to Jeju Island. "The fishermen are trying their best amid the hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are worried that our fishing industry as a whole will be in danger if Japan releases contaminated water into the sea... Regardless how many experts say the water is safe, nobody can know for sure." He worries the release of contaminated water is putting the fishing industry in jeopardy, but more importantly... it's threatening the daily lives and health of the community. "The ocean is our home... a place where we can all live together and protect our families." The organization said they will continue to hold protests and push to keep the nation's seafood safe.
