S. Korea deems Fukushima water release safe: Could this change tide of public opinion?

정부, 후쿠시마 오염수 '국제안전기준 부합' Seoul says Tokyo's Fukushima radioactive wastewater discharge plan satisfies international safety standards. Our Kim Yeon-seung tells us what this means. The South Korean government on Friday delivered its verdict on the controversial issue of Japan's treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. It's saying the water is safe to be released -provided, of course, that TEPCO, the firm in charge of the plant's decommissioning, follows through with its water treatment processes. The report indicates that the concentration of tritium that would potentially be released meets international safety and environmental benchmarks. This comes after a two-year investigation by a team from South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety. And the expert inspection team, who were sent to Japan to witness the Fukushima water treatment plants back in May, contributed to this report. The findings are in line with the conclusions from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which earlier this week gave a thumbs up to the treated water release, saying it would impose a "negligible radiological impact" on both people and the environment. Rafael Grossi, the Director General at the IAEA, is expected to touch down in South Korea this evening, after his Japan visit. His three-day stay here will include discussions with foreign minister Park Jin about the IAEA report and the road ahead. Now, there's been some skepticism surrounding the transparency of these investigations. And the public is against it as well. Just last month, a survey revealed that a staggering 85 percent of South Koreans opposed the water release. So, the question is -how much will the public be able to trust this report from the South Korean government and will it ease their concerns?
