Track 5 from their eighth album "Eliminator" released in 1983 copyright Warner Bros. Records. It was recorded at Frank Beard's home studio in Houston, Ardent Studios in Memphis and Terry Manning's home studio in Memphis. To say it was a blockbuster is an understatement since it dominated the charts worldwide and set the standard for the new and increasingly popular medium of music videos. Billy Gibbons had been intrigued by the new-wave bands coming out of England and their use of synthesizers and wondered how he could incorporate them into the band's music. Songwriter and former DJ Linden Hudson, who had worked as a pre-production engineer on their last album "El Loco," worked extensively with Gibbons to create new music that included synthesizers, while maintaining their signature guitar-based sound. They were mostly used to fatten the sound and were at times hidden in the mix. Hudson wrote "Thug" himself and co-wrote several other songs. However, for all his efforts he wasn't credited in any way, and synthesizers were never mentioned as being used in the album notes. After it was released, Hudson sued the band's management company for one million dollars as compensation for his work and was awarded six hundred thousand by the judge in the case. The album was named for Billy Gibbon's 1933 Ford coupe which was featured in their videos and was just a badass road machine. It's on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their videos also featured fuzzy sheepskin-covered guitars that spun around while being played. Multiple singles were released and "Legs" was their most successful, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard chart. The album received excellent reviews and was described as "boogie in overdrive" by critic Robert Christgau. Others commended the fact that underneath the synths, drum machines and elaborate production, there was always Gibbon's guitar sound and style rooted in the Delta Blues. It reached the Top Ten in nine countries and achieved Gold status in Austria and Switzerland, 3X Gold in Germany, Platinum in Finland and New Zealand, 2X Platinum in France, 4X Platinum in Australia and the U.K. and Diamond in Canada and the U.S. The band embarked on a year-long worldwide tour, adding dates along the way to meet demand.
