S. Korea sees biggest daily spike yet, confirming 2,223 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

신규확진 첫 2천명대, 오후 9시까지 2천21명…코로나 사태후 568일만 South Korea on Wednesday confirmed more than 2-thousand-2-hundred new cases of COVID-19,... the highest daily total the country has seen yet. Experts say the coming weeks could be even worse. Our Kim Yeon-seung is on the line. Yeon-seung, fill us in on these concerning developments. For the first time since the first confirmed case in South Korea in January 2020, the country has logged more than 2-thousand new cases in a single 24 hour period. South Korea on Wednesday reported an additional 2-thousand- 223 infections. All but 78 were local. 650 of the locally transmitted infections were from Seoul city alone. Health authorities say the Delta variant is driving up cases, with clusters erupting in workplaces, indoor sports facilities, churches, and at care hospitals. But this hike isn't seen as a big surprise. Experts last month already projected that, at the virus' current reproductive rate,.. the nation will see 2-thousand-5-hundred to 3-thousand new cases a day by late August. Experts are also worried about the enormous strain this will put on healthcare services, saying a sudden rise could overwhelm medical staff and supplies. This makes the race for vaccinations more pressing than ever. South Korea has recently faced trouble bringing in the promised 8-point-5 million doses of Moderna's vaccine and was able to deliver less than half of the supplies due in August. However, Pfizer's vaccine will be arriving in South Korea on schedule. One-point-six million additional doses arriving at Incheon International Airport in around an hour's time.
