1st Jan. 6 Insurrection Trial: US v. Guy Reffitt. What to Expect from the Prosecution, the Defense

The first criminal trial of a defendant charged with attacking the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, kicked off in DC federal district court on Monday, February 28, 2022. The defendant, Guy Reffitt, is charged with five felonies, including obstructing an official congressional proceeding, carrying a firearm and obstruction justice by threatening his own child in an attempt to prevent them from turning him in to the authorities. Jury selection began with a series of probing questions by the judge in an effort to pick jurors would could be fair and impartial. As the case moves toward opening statements, one of the most interesting and consequential question is, how will Reffitt chose to defend the case? Will he attempt to convince the jury that he was doing precisely what then-President Donald Trump told him to do? And if so, what are the implications for not only Reffit but for any future trial of Donald Trump himself?
