As of April 2022, when Sri Lanka officially announced its default, it had $4 billion in upcoming foreign debt payments, including a $1 billion international sovereign bond that was due to mature in July. In total, Sri Lanka owes $51 billion in debt and has become the first country to default since the Ukraine war began, with other vulnerable countries likely to follow suit.
