It is alleged that: in the fall of 2011, during a four-month period, 43 Division saw a significant increase in the number of shootings related to a struggle for dominance between two groups heavily involved in the drug trade in the Orton Park Road and Galloway Road areas these incidents were linked to a gang feud between two groups, the Galloway Boys Gang and the Orton Park Gang, who attempted to control the same area The Homicide Squad, with the assistance of Detective Services and Divisional Policing Command, started Project Brazen on April 23, 2012. The project came as a result of the investigation into the homicide of D'Mitre Barnaby and the investigation into a number of shootings in southeast Scarborough. It is alleged that: on Friday, December 30, 2011, at approximately 11 a.m., D'Mitre Barnaby, 24, was in the rear parking lot of 3895 Lawrence Avenue East two male suspects ran towards Barnaby, brandishing a handgun. The suspects and Barnaby became involved in a physical confrontation, at which time Barnaby was shot several times. He succumbed to his injuries the investigation revealed that the Barnaby homicide was a case of mistaken identity and that Mr. Barnaby was not affiliated to either of the two groups the Barnaby homicide and a number of shootings were associated with the escalation in gun violence between the Galloway Boys Gang and the Orton Park Gang Project Brazen concluded on September 22, 2012. This project resulted in the arrests of nine people, charged with 54 Criminal Code offences, relating to Attempt Murders, Trafficking, firearms and drug-related offences.
