In the Shafak region of northern Afghanistan, 400 kilometres (280 miles) from the Taliban stronghold of Mazar i Sharif, ordinary Afghanis live side by side with Northern Alliance forces. On Friday night, U-S planes dropped humanitarian aid into the region. VOICE-OVER: 0000 SOUND UP 0004 In the Shafak region of Northern Afghanistan, the Northern Alliance continues to pound Taliban forces. 0010 SOUND UP 0021 Within sight of the fighting, local civilians and refugees live side by side. They're gathering the fruits of the latest U-S government aid drop the night before. 0032 Inside the packages - a selection of food including tea, sugar, dried fruit and beans. 0039 UPSOT 0041 Saeed has eight children. Everyone's starving, he says. I'm glad to see that food has arrived. 0049 UPSOT 0051 It tastes quite good, says this Northern Alliance fighter, I like it very much. 0057 Similar drops have been made across Afghanistan. 0100 The aid agency Medecins Sans Frontiers says such air drops are inaccurate and can be dangerous. 0106 The country's rugged terrain is littered with landmines, which makes collecting the aid a treacherous process. 0112 All of which means, according aid groups, that air drops could end up doing more harm than good. 0120 VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
