York City’s final away game of the 1996/1997 season was absolutely massive with City having to win to avoid relegation and hope that other results went their way. While there was still a home game left to play against Crewe, the Rotherham United away game at Millmoor was seen as absolutely make or break. It looked like a fight between York City and Shrewsbury Town for the final relegation place and the Shrews also needed to win at home to Preston North End. Alan Little decided to go all-out attack against already-relegation Rotherham and selected Gary Bull, Rodney Rowe and Neil Tolson all to start the game. Backed by a large following from York, City went for it and were rewarded when Rodney Rowe volleyed home to put York in front, a goal that was met with scenes of carnage in the away end. In the second half, with news filtering through that Shrewsbury were losing, Neil Tolson headed home a second. The final whistle blew, York had won, Shrewsbury had lost and the party could begin. York stayed up in the end by a margin of five points ahead of Peterborough United, Shrewsbury Town, Rotherham United and Notts County, and could look forward to another season in the third tier of English football. York City: Warrington, McMillan, Himsworth, Bushell, Sharples, Barras, Pouton (Atkin), Tinkler, Tolson, Rowe (Bull), Stephenson.
