Pakistan Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif, on Friday accused India of "targeting civilians" hours after Indian shelling allegedly killed at least eight people and injured 47. The army chief visited the border region with India, discussed security issues with the border forces and enquired about the health of the injured being treated in a military hospital. He said India blatantly violated ceasefire along the Line of Control and Working Boundary. The Pakistani military said in a statement that the cross-border shelling occurred near the Sialkot District on Friday, and killed eight people, including one woman, and injured 47, including 24 women and 11 children. It is the largest casualties on a single day in recent cross-border shelling, the military said. India fired to Pakistani territory early in the morning and Pakistan fired back later, the statement said. Several villages along the working border came under heavy firing that forced many people to flee, Pakistani residents said. Indian officials also said that three civilians were killed and 16 injured in "shelling by Pakistani forces." Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire along the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region in 2003. However, border troops of both countries occasionally exchanged fires. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also expressed his concerns over the escalation of tension along the working boundary, the prime minister's office said Friday.
