남북정상, 文퇴임 앞두고 친서교환..."노력하면 관계발전" The leaders of the two Koreas exchanged personal letters this week. This comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula... and only a few weeks before President Moon Jae-in leaves office in May. For more we have our Yoon Jung-min live on the phone. Jung-min, what's the latest? The Blue House confirmed this morning that President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have exchanged letters recently. This morning, the North's Korean Central News Agency said President Moon sent a letter to Kim on Wednesday... and Kim sent a reply the next day. President Moon reportedly mentioned the two leaders' efforts for peace and inter-Korean cooperation despite the difficult situation... and showed his will to continue support for re-unification after he retires. According to the KCNA, Chairman Kim appreciated President Moon's efforts for the Korean people until the end of his term. The KCNA said the two agreed that there will be improvements in inter-Korean ties... if they put in the effort, adding the exchange of letters shows "deep trust" between them. The two leaders have been reportedly exchanging letters since 2018... even after the North Korea-U.S. summit in 2019 ended without an outcome... and when the North cut off inter-Korean communication lines in 2020. The two leaders seem to still be communicating despite heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula recently... as North Korea continues testing its missiles, including an inter-continental ballistic missile. The recent exchange of letters comes as President Moon's five-year term is nearing an end. He is set to leave office in May.
