WEST BANK: HEBRON: PALESTINIAN YOUTHS STONE ISRAELI SETTLERS' CARS

(30 Jun 1997) Natural Sound Palestinians stoned Israeli cars in a show of anger over posters depicting Mohammed as a pig writing in a book labelled the Koran. The posters were pasted on Palestinian shopkeepers doors on Saturday. A 25 year old woman,Tatiana Susskind, has been arrested in connection with the posters. Instead of clashing with Israeli soldiers, Palestinian youths on Sunday stoned cars belonging to Israelis settlers. The latest flare up in Hebron comes after posters showing a pig labelled Mohammed, holding a pencil in his hooves and writing in a book labelled the Koran were put on shop doors. The pig is considered unclean and this is considered a great insult to the Arabs. No injuries or other clashes were reported, despite threats of suicide bombings by the Islamic Jihad group. Even the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has condemned the posters, Judaism says there must be respect and tolerance for other religions. Israeli soldiers, using rubber bullets, were called in to disperse the stone-throwers. There were no reports of injuries. Most of Hebron - where 500 Israeli settlers live amid 130,000 Arabs - is controlled by the Palestinian Authority. But Israel retains the downtown area where the settlers and thousands of Palestinians live, and the area remains a flashpoint of violence.
