Timbuktu Manuscripts Rescue — Timbuktu, Mali, 2012–2013

Timbuktu’s manuscripts represent centuries of West African scholarship—law, astronomy, poetry, medicine—kept in family libraries and institutions. During the 2012–2013 conflict, Islamist militants threatened destruction. Local scholars, librarians, and ordinary citizens organized a covert rescue—packing manuscripts into metal trunks, burying them, and transporting them under cover of night to safe houses and vaults across Mali and beyond. Their quiet courage saved tens of thousands of works that would otherwise have been lost. The operation is a testament to local stewardship and the idea that saving culture is an act of bravery. — CHAPTERS 0:00 – Introduction 0:12 – Timbuktu’s Intellectual Heritage 0:40 – The Threat and Occupation 1:10 – The Rescue Operations 1:40 – Preservation and Global Response — ABOUT THE CHANNEL Echoes of Us — Where Yesterday Speaks.
