Mele Fong & Richard Tom - The Hawaiian Serenaders - performed the Medley: We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Mele Kalikimaka with two ukulele strums in 2015. #playuke #ukulelemusic #christmasmusic We Wish You a Merry Christmas is one of many of the oldest Christmas carols known as wait’s carols, sung by a municipal chorus of singers in merrie old England. The waits were especially busy at Christmastime serenading on frosty nights, and in return, they might receive coins or a bit of fig pudding. Mele Kalikimaka was composer Robert Alex Anderson’s most enduring hit in 1949. Anderson was born in Hawaii in 1894 and composed many songs in the hapa haole genre (Hawaiian style music with English lyrics). These songs came to represent Hawaii in many parts of the world and is still heard today in distant places as well as at home in Hawaii. As the story goes, one day a secretary at a company Anderson was working at told him there was no Hawaiian Christmas song. That inspired him to write “Mele Kalikimaka.” Anderson was friends with Bing Crosby. Crosby asked if he could record the song and it became a huge hit for him when he recorded it with the Andrews Sisters the following year.
