Exterior of Shifa hospital STORYLINE: Israel stepped up the pressure on Hamas on Thursday launching a helicopter attack on a target outside the Gaza home of deposed Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniyeh. The helicopter hit a police roadblock about 150 metres (yards) from the home of Haniyeh, in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City. One person was killed and four people were wounded, officials said. Some of the injured were taken to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Haniyeh, who has been hiding from the Israelis for weeks, wasn't believed to be in the area. The attack appeared to be aimed at sending a message to Hamas since the heavily populated area is not used to launch rockets. The Israeli army had no immediate comment. Israeli aircraft struck a series of targets throughout the Gaza Strip on Thursday, killing 14 Palestinians - including four youths and the son of a hardline Hamas leader - in a fresh upsurge in fighting. Israel has carried out numerous deadly incursions and airstrikes in the sovereign territory since it unilaterally withdrew in 2005, it says to stop rocket attacks, killing hundreds of militants and civilians, and declared the coastal strip an "enemy entity" last June when Hamas overran it.
