Palestinians pray near contested holy site

(24 Jul 2017) Several thousand Palestinian Muslims prayed in the streets near Lion's Gate, one of the entrances to the Al Aqsa mosque, in Jerusalem on Monday evening. A crisis erupted last week after Israel installed metal detectors at the Al Aqsa compound following a shooting attack that killed two policemen. Israel's move triggered Muslim protests and claims it's trying to expand its role at the site, which is also holy to Jews. Israel denies this. Such prayers, with the faithful kneeling in orderly lines on the pavement, have been the main form of Palestinian protest in the past week, signaling their refusal to pass through the metal detectors.
