The hilltop holy site in Jerusalem's Old City is known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Haram as-Sharif or Noble Sanctuary. The compound holds two mosques, the Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock, built above the ruins of of the biblical Jewish temples. The Al Aqsa mosque is Islam's third-holiest site. In Rafah refugee camp in Gaza, about 8,000 people turned out in a demonstration organised by Fatah. Some carried a model of the Al Aqsa mosque. Nabil Shaath, the Palestinian deputy Prime Minister was also in the crowd. Jewish access to the compound has been strictly limited since Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war, and a large-scale rally would raise tensions with the Palestinians. Jews opposed to Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip want to rally at the site on Sunday in a move aimed at sabotaging the pullout. Hamas supporters have threatened to end a month-long truce if Jewish extremists follow through with their plans. Israeli authorities have tightened access to the holy site and have stepped up preparations to bar Jewish demonstrators from the area during the planned rally on Sunday in order to avert any clashes.
