N. Korea winds down preparations as party congress nears

"北, 당 대회 3~4일간 개최될 가능성. 당 대회 앞두고 평양ㆍ국경지역 특별경비주간 선포" In three days, we can expect to get a clearer look at North Korea's plans for its future, when it convenes a rare meeting of its ruling Workers' Party. Connie Kim takes us through the preparations and possible schedule for Pyongyang's highest-level meeting. North Korea's ruling Workers' Party congress is expected to be held for three to four days starting on Friday, according to a source familiar with North Korea who provided a sketch of the itinerary for the upcoming event. The first day will begin with an opening speech, a briefing from the party's Central Committee and related discussions. The second day will consist of a briefing from the party's Central Auditing Commission, after which party members will discuss new policies and adopt a written decision statement. On the third day, the party will elect officials for both the Central Committee and Central Auditing Commission. Because day three falls on a Sunday, it's not known whether the event will proceed through the weekend or skip a day and continue on Monday. The source said congress participants have already entered Pyongyang, which is under tight surveillance during a special period around the party congress. Border cities with China are also under guard. In the run-up to the party congress, North Korea on Monday announced it had successfully ended its "70-day battle" campaign to boost production,... despite suffering under multiple layers of international sanctions for its nuclear and missile weapons development. The North's daily Rodong Sinmun said it had topped production records in electricity, transportation and coal. However, a South Korean government official has dismissed the claim,... saying Pyongyang's production is limited, as it depends solely on human labor. "The preparations for North Korea’s ruling Workers' Party congress are almost complete. The officials elected and the message delivered, which is likely to focus on economic development, are expected to lay the groundwork for North Korea’s future. Connie Kim, Arirang News."
