(14 Jul 1963) France celebrates Bastille Day to commemorate the storming of the Bastille in 1789. This year, about 60,000 people lined the Champs Elysees so see the new modernised French Army parade past Pres. DE GAULLE and Prime Minister POMPIDOU. A feature of the parade was the first public appearance of the new medium tank, AMX 30. Back again in favour, the Foreign Legion took part in the parade again. It ended as a group of the new Mystere jets flew by trailing streams of red, white and blue smoke. In the evening, huge fireworks went off from 5 vantage points in the French capital while people danced till the small hours of the next day.
