Earlier in the day, the city's party to mark the start, in 1789, of the French revolution began with bagpipes, dressage and several renditions of the Marseillaise national anthem. The fireworks were the finale to a day of festivities that marked Francois Hollande's first Bastille Day as French President. Many Parisians said the celebration was an antidote to the weighty political and economic issues facing France and the eurozone. For others, the display evoked French pride. An estimated 500,000 Parisians and tourists gathered to watch the show. Bastille Day marks the 14 July 1789 storming of the Bastille prison by Paris crowds that helped spark the French Revolution.
