Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict: Tensions between the two neighbours have sharply escalated after Pakistani airstrikes hit multiple locations, including cities of Kabul, Kandahar, and a refugee camp in Nangarhar province. Islamabad says the strikes targeted Taliban defence positions and claims over 130 Taliban fighters were killed. In a statement, Afghan defence ministry said that it hit multiple Pakistani bases, including in Islamabad. Afghan authorities previously said retaliatory operations along the border killed 55 Pakistani soldiers and accuse Pakistan of violating Afghan sovereignty. Residents reported fighter jets and explosions overnight, while mortar shelling injured civilians at a refugee camp near the Torkham crossing. Relations between the neighbours have deteriorated for months amid border clashes and militant attacks. Pakistan accuses the Taliban government of allowing Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan militants to operate from Afghan territory, a claim Kabul denies. Iran and Saudi Arabia have called for dialogue as fears of wider escalation grow.
