Activity detected at N.Korea's nuclear test site: 38 North / YTN

Activity in North Korea's key nuclear test site at Punggye-ri has been detected. According to the 38 North website, commercial satellite imagery shot on September 18 shows new activity at the West Portal area of the Punggye-ri site, where nuclear tests were detonated in 2009 and 2013. In addition, movements of an unusually large number of vehicles at a checkpoint leading to the West Portal, indicate ongoing activities in the area. Although the website states that the exact purpose of the activity is unknown, there is speculation that Pyongyang plans to conduct a fourth nuclear test to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its ruling Workers' Party of Korea next month. Meanwhile, pundits say that North Korean nuclear issues will likely be one of the top issues on the agenda at the summit talks between U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for later today (Friday) in Washington.
