ISRAEL: PALESTINIAN POLICE RAID UNIVERSITY IN THE GAZA STRIP

(6 Mar 1996) English/Nat Palestinian police have raided a university in the Gaza Strip that is a stronghold of the militant Islamic group Hamas. Hamas is responsible for the recent suicide bomb attacks in Israel that have killed 57 people. This morning's raid followed Israel's crackdown on three other universities in the West Bank. All quiet in the library but earlier this university was the scene of the latest attempt by the Palestinian police to crack down on Hamas. Officers raided the Islamic University in Gaza City Wednesday morning. They took over the school's mosque and briefly detained seven guards. Police searched the campus, breaking down doors and confiscating books. None of the four-thousand students were on the campus at the time. The raid is part of a campaign to prevent Muslim radicals from carrying out more devastating bombings in Israel. Palestinian President Yasser Arafat reiterated his commitment to the crackdown. SOUNDBITE: (English) You have to follow up our Security National Council to understand the very tough and very big measures which we have already started against these groups which we have banned and outlawed. (Did you declare a war against Hamas and Islamic Jihad?) It is not a war it is discipline. SUPER CAPTION: President Yasser Arafat, Palestinian leader Today's crackdown followed Israel's shutdown of three Palestinian Universities in the West Bank on Tuesday. Security forces welded the windows and doors shut at the Islamic University last night. They had searched the building, taking away some documents. The building has been declared shut for an indefinite period. Tel Aviv is the most recent target of the Hamas bombers. On Monday an explosion in the heart of the city killed 13 Israelis. A makeshift shrine has been set up for the victims of the attack. Nearby workman continue the job of repairing shops damaged by the bomb. Little by little the city is returning to normal. Some shops have reopened in Dizengof street where the bomb went off. There is even life in some of the street cafes. SOUNDBITE: English For some life has returned to routine for some people it has not and for some it cannot because they have suffered so much. But I think we are a strong people we will know what to do. SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP But the dead from Monday's attack are still being buried. This morning in Jerusalem the funeral of another of the 13 victims of the Hamas bombing in Tel Aviv. Stricken with grief, the family of Rachel Sela laid her to rest.
