Prof.M.P.Manmathan (1914-94) was the President of Kerala Prohibition Council and was a social reformer. Prof.Manmathan was a renowned Sarvodaya leader of Kerala. He was one of the most famous orators in Malayalam and he could keep his audience spellbound for hours together. He was one of those who were detained without trial during the infamous emergency in 1975. After his release he addressed well attended public meetings and the people became conscious of the perils of the suspension of fundamental rights during the Emergency. He began his career as the headmaster of a school in Muvattupuzha (Ernakulam District) under the N.S.S Management in 1937. Later he became the Karayogam Registrar and then the General Secretary of Nair Service Society (1948 -- 52). He played a dominant role in building up the various educational institutions of N.S.S in Kerala and was the left hand of Sri.Mannath Padmanabhan. He performed a number of Kathaprasangam to collect money for the N.S.S institutions. He was a stunning and spectacular orator who could attract thousands of people through his speech. He acted as the hero in a Malayalam film "Yaachakan" in 1951.
