Prof.M.P.Manmathan was a renowned Sarvodaya leader of Kerala. He was one of the most famous orators in Malayalam and he could keep his audience spellbound for hours together. He was one of those who were detained without trial during the infamous emergency. After his release he addressed well attended public meetings and the people became conscious of the perils of the suspension of fundamental rights during the Emergency. However he did not contest any election. He spearheaded a campaign for eschewing alcoholic drinking as one of his social programmes. As part of the said propaganda he and his followers picketed liquor shops for preventing the customers from entering into such shops. The liquor barons of Kerala organized to meet the situation. The police force moved fast and arrested him and his followers.
