Join our journey to explore and understand what is needed to create an effective water vision for Auroville, the City the Earth needs. This video features four different farmers' perspectives to the current water situation in Auroville. Please join us in exploring the dreams, challenges and opportunities farmers face in this unique context. Presenting different perspectives here are: Priya, Tomas, Ramalingam and Krishna. Auroville's Citizens Assembly is an action research project to experiment with new models for community explorations and discussions. The aim is to explore how this model (which is currently being tried across the world) could work in our unique community. The topic for this pilot assembly is to produce a water vision for Auroville and develop recommendations for its implementation. As in many places in the world Auroville faces a water shortage in coming years, so this is a critical community issue. Auroville is an experimental city in the making, that was founded in 1968 in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is dedicated to the ideal of human unity, based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Auroville wants to be a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. Auroville was founded on a barren plateau, which was successfully regenerated through reforestation work, rainwater conservation, construction of check-dams and tank rehabilitation works. However, bioregional and global change mean that it is likely to face a water shortage in the near future. Interviews Krishna, originally from England, founded Auroville’s Solitude Farm in 1996. The techniques and philosophies applied in Solitude Farm, a non-interventional paradigm of farming, inherently point in a direction of sustainability for water. A focus on local foods means that less water is used, as local foods are adapted to the climate and seasonal rainfall of this region. Priya started Buddha Garden in Auroville in 2000 and is still involved with the day to day practical work with the rest of the team. She also writes about her farming practice and produces weekly videos. The Buddha Garden team is very sensitive to the water issue and constantly has to carefully assess the growing schedule in the light of the decreasing amount of water available. Ramalingam joined Auroville in 1984, after a long relationship as a student and employee since 1968. Since 2009, he has been involved in agriculture, including running and managing Sustenance Farm. In 2016, he started the Sustenance Farm restaurant Akshaya, which cooks with ingredients grown on the farm. As a farmer, water is an essential resource for his work. His restaurant also requires water in order to function. Tomas has been farming in Auroville since 1983 and is currently running Annapurna Farm, the community’s largest and only certified organic farm. Annapurna produces grains, fruits and dairy products for the community. Farming and water are closely related. In Auroville, with the long dry seasons, water becomes even more important.
