Auroville Citizens Assembly | Water Context Chapter 1 | Auroras Eye Films

Join our journey to explore and understand what is needed to create an effective water vision for Auroville, the City the Earth needs. Auroville's Citizens Assembly is a research project to experiment with new models for community explorations and discussions. The aim is to explore how this model (which is currently being tried across the world) could work in our community. The aim of the pilot is to produce a water vision for Auroville and develop recommendations for its implementation. As in many places in the world Auroville faces a water shortage in coming years, so this is a critical community issue. This video introduces various nuances of context relevant to work with water in the Auroville area: from within the community, to the larger Bioregion and to global scales of climate change. Please join us in exploring the various complexities that impact water management in the Auroville area with community members that navigate and work in these different spaces: Allan, Juergen, Kireet and Tency. Auroville is an experimental city in the making, that was founded in 1968 in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is dedicated to the ideal of human unity, based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Auroville wants to be a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. Auroville was founded on a barren plateau, which was successfully regenerated through reforestation work, rainwater conservation, construction of check-dams and tank rehabilitation works. However, bioregional and global change mean that it is likely to face a water shortage in the near future. Interviews Allan is working with Deep Adaptation Auroville and at AuroOrchard Farm. In particular he has been grappling with the current and coming challenges for water & food/nutrition security for the Auroville bioregion, primarily from a land-use / resource stewardship perspective. Before coming to Auroville, he spent 5 years working in local government planning departments, specialising in setting and implementing green & blue infrastructure policy: managing flood risks to towns under different climate change scenarios; protecting and enhancing parks, forests, sustainable urban drainage etc. Juergen came to Auroville in 1973 and intensively learned about and applied water conservation practices on various lands. In 1990 he created Palmyra, Centre for Ecological Landuse and Rural Development, and worked in a large circle around Auroville, building dams, kolams and bunds on three to four thousand acres of village land, planting more than two million trees, with direct village involvement and participation. Kireet first came to Auroville in 1972 and settled down in Auroville, Gaia’s Garden in 1996. His main work in water in Auroville comprises landscaping and building of dams and other rainwater harvesting structures throughout Auroville. He is responsible for carefully enhancing, maintaining and guarding many of the water landscape areas of Auroville, ranging from the Utility Canyon, to the International Zone and Hermitage. Tency has been involved in water and sanitation in Auroville for the past 40 years. He was first asked in ‘78 and ‘79 to take up the coordination of drilling wells in Auroville, and this formed the first part of an on-going exploration with water in Auroville: from drilling wells, to water management on the land, bunding, and then wastewater. He currently manages CSR and Aurore Trust, and focuses on research and development for wastewater treatment technology, Vortex DEWATS (Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems), and is part of the Auroville Water Group.
