Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 13 in B-flat major, K. 333 / 315c (Allegro ) pianist Duane Hulbert

Mozart's Piano Sonata K. 333 in B-flat major was written in 1783. Listen to this lively, charming first movement-- quintessential Mozart. Notes from pianist Duane Hulbert: 1. Listen to the falling scale motive in the opening bars from 0:00-0:07, followed by rising scales at 0:13-0:19. (Mozart loved to have balance in his structure!) 2. After the opening bars, Mozart immediately begins another series of rising scales at 0:27. 3. A new key center in appears at 0:48 with a half cadence in the dominant key of F major. 4. A hint of G minor enters at 0:58? 5. No, the G minor section disappears as the major key of F takes over through to the end of the exposition. Then, at 2:03 a long trill finishes the first section of the movement followed by a cadence in F major at 2:15. 6. Does Mozart tease us with another theme from 2:16? No, this is just a thematic development from 2:31-2:59, where wild 16th notes in BOTH HANDS rattle on in F minor. 7. As the development winds down with chromatic scales at 3:11, the gently winding lines in the right hand lead to the recapitulation at 3:17. There, all of the themes return triumphantly in the home key of B-flat major. 8. How will the movement end? After a glorious long trill is heard at 5:33, the music eases down toward a rather quiet cadence in B flat at the end. For those of you who are looking for a grand finale in B-flat major….. well, you’ll have to listen to the magnificent ending to the third movement!"
