한미 고위급협의 "유엔결의에 '北석탄수출 통제' 포함해야" South Korea and the U.S. on Friday thoroughly discussed policies on North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations,... including ways to add stricter sanctions towards Pyongyang in a new UNSC resolution in the works and in response to the regime's fifth nuclear test in September. Kim Mok-yeon reports. South Korea's Deputy National Security Advisor Cho Tae-yong and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken met in Seoul on Friday to seek ways to increase pressure on North Korea. The two sides emphasized that the new UN Security Council resolution, currently under discussion and in response to the North's fifth nuclear test in September, should include stricter, more effective measures that can isolate the regime. These measures included the control of North Korea's coal exports, as it currently acts as the key source of the regime's foreign currency. Seoul and Washington also reaffirmed their stance that Pyongyang cannot be considered as a nuclear-armed regime. They said that they will strengthen comprehensive efforts to sanction and pressure Pyongyang as the regime is showing no intention towards a meaningful dialogue for denuclearization. The two sides also emphasized the importance of the decision made at recent bilateral defense talks in Washington,... to expand extended deterrence against North Korea. Blinken is set to land in China on Saturday to hold further discussions on North Korea with Chinese officials. Kim Mok-yeon, Arirang News.
