Highway 1 Cuesta College Fatal Vehicle Collision November 9, 2016

November 9, 2016. Highway 1 at Education Dr, North of San Luis Obispo, CA CHP reports that 3 vehicles were traveling Southbound when an Isuzu box truck rear ended a silver sedan, pushing it out of the way before rear ending a black Ford F150 pickup, carrying the pickup and box truck off the road into a drainage ditch and fence. Witnesses reported that the sedan and pickup were stopped when struck. A multitude of agencies responded including Cuesta College Police Department arriving first on scene along with CAL FIRE, San Luis City Fire, San Luis Ambulance, Inc., CHP including K9 Officers who were nearby at Camp SLO training, Camp SLO Military Police, the SLO Sheriffs Dept and CMC Fire. Unfortunately medics pronounced the female passenger of the sedan deceased. The male driver of the sedan had minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. The occupants were reportedly French tourists, not speaking English, and the vehicle most likely a rental. The driver of the F150 pickup was also transported with minor injuries, and the driver of the box truck was treated on scene. CHP performed a battery of field sobriety tests as well as called in a drug recognition expert to examine the driver, who was not arrested. His telephone was seized by CHP and a warrant will be obtained to examine the possibility of distracted driving. Quite a backup was caused as Southbound Hwy 1 was detoured through Cuesta College and out OConnor Way until the Highway was reopened at 5PM.
