Maternity hospital exterior, man sweeping debris STORYLINE: Staff at a maternity hospital in separatist-held Donetsk on Tuesday showed the damage the building sustained under what they said was shelling. Dmitry Bessonov, the deputy general director of the medical centre, said the shelling had damaged the roof and windows of the facility. Bessonov said there was a "real threat to the lives" of children who were on life support in the hospital and could not be moved to the basement. Russia-backed separatists who hold control of Donetsk city had said Monday Ukrainian forces shelled a market in the regional capital, killing three civilians and injuring 18 more. It was the fiercest shelling by Ukrainian forces since 2015, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Russian forces in the last few weeks have pressed hard to capture Ukraine's eastern Donbas area, which borders Russia and is made up of the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk. It is the industrial heartland of the country. If Russia prevails in the battle of Donbas, it will mean that Ukraine loses not only land but perhaps the bulk of its most capable military forces, opening the way for Moscow to grab more territory and dictate its terms to Kyiv. A Russian failure could lay the grounds for a Ukrainian counteroffensive. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
