Various of Powell meeting journalists from seven new NATO countries STORYLINE: U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived in Brussels on Thursday to hold talks with NATO leaders on improving peacekeeping measures in Iraq. The ideas Powell will discuss on Friday with the ministers range from taking over command of a multinational division to training peacekeeping and Iraqi forces to improve security in the country. Seventeen of the 26 NAT0 members are already playing a military role, but the Bush administration would like more of them to participate. On Thursday, Powell met with journalists from the seven former communist countries that formally entered NATO on Monday. Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia now come under NATO''s defensive umbrella - taking the alliance''s membership from 19 to 26. Before arriving in Brussels, Powell had attended a conference on Afghanistan in Berlin where he said drugs, crime and warlords could threaten reconstruction efforts in the country. In a speech to delegates, Powell said U.S remains committed to Afghanistan and said the U.S is prepared to supply security forces until the country can provide its own security. In a statement given to reporters in Berlin, Powell said, "There is no place in the new Afghanistan for private armies or sectarian violence."
