A giant pile of lifejackets abandoned by refugees is forming a temporary memorial project in Germany. Chinese artist and free-speech advocate Ai Weiwei collected the jackets from Greece and has placed them outside the Schauspielhaus concert hall to commemorate the refugees who drowned on their way to Europe. It comes after giant piles of lifejackets built up on the shores of the Greek island of Lesbos, as Eastern European countries plan to support Macedonia in efforts to seal its border with Greece. The move would effectively trap incoming asylum-seekers in Greece. The EU told Athens today that its failure to control the hundreds of thousands of refugees who have arrived in the past year will result in a long-term suspension of some passport-free travel in Europe. There is concern that a 'domino effect' of border closures across the Visegrad countries would trap migrants and refugees in some of Europe's poorest countries.
