Stop Plant Vogtle Atlanta, a group comprised of local activists, non-profits and concerned consumers, organized the action and is calling for the PSC to refrain from approving any more of Georgia Power's costs for the Vogtle project, citing the following reasons: The project takes money from Georgians who have no say over whether or not they want nuclear expansion in Georgia, and certainly no say in if they would be willing to pay for them. The nuclear tax ("Nuclear Construction Cost Recovery" fee, as it is listed on Georgia Power bills) is not optional. Georgia Power has indeed threatened to cut off power to customers who refuse to pay the nuclear tax. But they are willing to ask customers to pay more on their bill for merely the symbolic use of renewable energy sources. The Vogtle 3 and 4 expansion is hundreds of millions of dollars over budget due to mistakes in the foundation pour. And just recently steel plating which was to be used in the safe housing of these reactors was found to be faulty, meaning new overruns and delays are pretty much assured. Georgia Power's solution to such problems is to sue its construction partners, leaving open the question of who will foot the bill for the legal costs. And furthermore, should they lose, how much will we, the people, be forced to pay? http://stopplantvogtle.com / 256572147775621
