INVISIBLE...SRH experiences of Women with Disabilities

INVISIBLE is a video documentary produced by Disability Rights Advocacy Center with support from USAID-Nigeria to tell the story of sexual and reproductive health challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in Nigeria... In Nigeria, it is sad to see very low levels of citizen engagement in human rights / social justice issues, especially when it has to do with disability discrimination and exclusion. When it comes to disability issues, there is very little interest from the public beyond the charity/pity approach...nobody actually stops to ponder how does a deaf woman learn anything about her pregnancy and impending labor and delivery during an antenatal class, how does a woman in a wheelchair get weighed at the hospital, how does a blind woman know what medication she’s taking, if a young blind or deaf girl is raped, what options are available to her? The aim of this documentary is to tell the story of the INVISIBILITY of women with disabilities in the healthcare system and in society generally, highlighting the challenges they face especially with regards to their sexual and reproductive health and the response or lack of from Government. In addition, the documentary will act as a tool to galvanize citizens for more effective advocacy and engagement with duty bearers to sign the Disability Bill into Law and make the healthcare system more accessible and inclusive.
