In this livestream, I share updates on Salman Rushdie's condition, as well as the latest on the motivations and background of his assailant, who is facing attempted murder and assault charges. I also discuss my thoughts on how this attack will impact the public discourse around Islam: will ex-Muslims and legitimate criticism of Islam be silenced more than they already have? Or will the shocking reality of this attack open more people's eyes to the necessity of honestly and fearlessly tackling Islam's problematic aspects? In case you missed the news: Acclaimed novelist Salman Rushdie was attacked on Friday, Aug 12, at an event in New York. He's alive and the assailant has been apprehended and charged with attempted murder and assault. He has pleaded not guilty. Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and abdomen and also sustained injuries to his eye and arm. He has been taken off a ventilator and is now able to speak-and he's making jokes! I hope you can all join me in wishing Rushdie a safe and speedy recovery. We can't allow fear and violence to silence legitimate criticism of Islam or artistic expression.
