French FM calls for halt to Aleppo "massacre"

(12 Oct 2016) French Foreign Minister Marc Ayrault on Wednesday called for a halt to the Aleppo "massacre". Ayrault said the bombings need to stop, and it "is never too late to make peace". He spoke alongside his Italian and German counterparts, Paolo Gentiloni and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in Rome. Violence has flared in Syria, particularly in and around the northern city of Aleppo, since a US and Russian-brokered cease-fire collapsed last month. Speaking about the migrant crisis in Europe, Steinmeier said EU member states need to "stabilise those countries from where the majority of migrants and refugees are coming" in order to stem the flow. The three ministers also discussed a common European defence and security strategy, the relationship with Russia, migration, and the future of the European Union after "Brexit."
