South Korea and the United States are set to hold high-level talks in Seoul later today (Monday) to discuss their coordination in implementing new sanctions on North Korea. Seoul's Foreign Ministry said Amb. Sung Kim, U.S. special representative for North Korea policy arrived in Seoul earlier in the day for talks with Kim Hong-Kyun, South Korea's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs. The two officials represent Washington and Seoul, respectively, for the Six-Party Talks aimed at denuclearizing North Korea. The ministry added that U.S. coordinators for sanctions policy from the State Department, the Treasury Department and the Commerce Department will also join the meeting. Their discussions will focus on ways to increase pressure on the defiant North Korean regime following the new U.N. Security Council resolution imposing its toughest sanctions against Pyongyang for provocations earlier this year, according to the Seoul ministry. The allies have been pressing the North through reinforced U.N. sanctions, independent sanctions by each country as well as pressure by the international community. Seoul will reportedly hold similar high-level talks with Japan on North Korea sanctions, following its consultations with Washington.
