Can painful periods affect fertility? - Dr. Sangeeta Gomes

Painful periods can be of congestive or spasmodic type. Usually all young women experience this painful periods every month. It is usually caused by the uterine contractions in order to expel the blood collection and the dead endometrial tissue. When the uterus muscles after contracting they release certain chemicals which causes pain and this can be relieved by hot bath or by analgesic tablets. This pain is usually experienced every month by a woman. But if there is a change on the type of the pain late in the 20’s or 30’s or 40’s it is considered as a secondary dysmenorrhea. This is due to a new conditions arising like a pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroid complicating pregnancy, submucus ovarian polyp, an ovarian cyst or also a simple intrauterine contraceptive device. Therefore whether these new factors are affecting the fertility can only be diagnosed by further investigations and further management to be done.
